My Adventure South Africa
Lewis Pugh Swimming for Climate Change

In May Lewis Pugh will be attempting a 1km swim under the summit of Mount Everest to draw attention to the impacts of climate change.  Lewis will attempt the swim at an altitude of 5,300 metres in the freezing waters of a lake on the Khumbu Glacier.

As a result of global warming, temperatures in the Himalayas have risen by 1 degree Celsius and the glaciers in the Himalayas are receding.  These glaciers are not just ice. They are a lifeline – they provide water to a fifth of the world’s population.  It’s essential that politicians put aside their differences and agree a bold strategy to reduce climate change to below current levels.  There is no time for delay.

Kingsley Holgate’s - United Against Malaria

Kingsley Holgate’s 2010 United Against Malaria Expedition will distribute 10 000 mosquito nets and deliver malaria prevention education to about 1 million people across 12 African countries. Kingsley and a team of volunteers will depart on April 25, as a symbolic gesture and commemoration of World Malaria Day.

Kingsley Holgate says: “The 2010 United Against Malaria Expedition is a continuation of the One Net, One Life campaign and aims to reach the most remote parts of Africa. The journey will span over 16 000km, covering sections of southern, central and East Africa, which include Mozambique, Botswana, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.  In late 2009, the disease reached epidemic proportions in the northern provinces of Burundi.

This initiative has the full backing of United against Malaria, an umbrella partnership of various interested parties which advocates the eradication of Malaria as part of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG).  Amongst others, the MDG aims to minimise HIV/AIDS and Malaria, reduce the number of child mortalities and eradicate hunger and poverty.

Cycling - Natal South Coast

Clearwater Trails Gorge View

What a crazy year it's been, with the economy going for a loop and South Africa getting the FIFA Soccer World Cup fever. One of the only constants has been cycling. With the season drawing to a close I am finding myself on holiday in the South coast of Natal, about 20km from Margate. The information on cycling in the area has been very scarce. I tried a couple of websites to get some info but little was forthcoming.

The well-publicized clearwater trails are a primary yet formal attraction for mountain biking. You can find information on clearwater trails by going to their site. A good review has also been published at mtboline. Mountain biking is the main attraction in the South Coast; with all the brush and off road areas you will see why. But if you’re a roady - good routes await you.

Cape Epic - Western Cape

If you have not heard of the Cape Epic, chances are you have not been mountain biking for a very long time. Let me give you a brief outline – 1200 riders, teams of 2, mostly living in a mobile tented camp. These riders press on for 8 days, about 700km depending on the year, through beautiful South African surroundings. The elevation in terrain is massive, but can differ from year to year. Now don't let me fool you, I am a novice - raw as can be. I participated in my first MTB race in May 2008 and my first Epic in 2009. Thank goodness for an uber partner, Joggie - Number 5 for him. All the tips I picked up were either from him or because of him.

“Is this for me?” you ask. Are you scared of dust, constantly rolling hills, other people, pain, heat, tented camps or portable toilets? If so then it probably isn’t for you. Did I mention there are B&B options as well as Camper rentals? That might encourage a few to give it a try.

For us the journey began like this…
